It’s a bit long, but here’s Ars Technica’s explanation. For example, a clock with a serial number ending AT would have been shipped in January 1955. A clock with a serial number ending BU would have been shipped in February 1956, while a clock with a serial number ending CU would have been shipped in March 1956. And a clock with a serial number ending DV would have left the plant in April 1957.

Please follow the steps outlined below:

1. Turn the dial 3 times to the right and stop on the first number of the sequence.
2. Turn the dial to the left, pass the first number of the sequence and stop on the second number.
3. Turn the dial to the right and stop on the third number of the sequence.
4. Pull up on the shackle.
