Not using the setup script, or selecting relative paths in the setup script, is preferred if you are installing XAMPP on a usb drive. Because on each pc such a drive can have an other drive letter. You can switch from absolute to relative paths at any time with the setup script. I have Xampp installed on Mac OSX Version 10.9.2 and all works fine with htdocs and my sql. I would like to be able to run Xampp from my computer but access files on external lacie drive with Firewire 800 (not thunderbolt capable).

Step 1:- First of all, go to XAMPP official website to download the setup for the software. On the download page, you will find many types of XAMPP setup files.

You have to click on “More Downloads“.

Step 2:- A new page will open for you. On this page, you will find an option to download the portable XAMPP file.

Download the .exe file to your computer.

The position of the download link keeps changing. So make sure that you choose the portable version of the XAMPP software.

If you download the simple XAMPP version then it won’t work on a USB drive.

Step 3:- Plug in the USB drive to your computer and click on the setup file to install the setup. In the middle, you would be asked to choose the location for the setup.

Choose the USB drive. I have shown the “F” drive.

I have also created a new folder with the name “XAMPP”. You can change it. The choice is yours.

Step 4:- In the middle or at the last, you would be asked to change the user permissions so that all the features of the Xampp software can work properly.

Getting Started With Xampp

I've installed XAMPP 1.7.7 on an external hard drive. My Windows XP desktop can run XAMPP fine from the external. But when I plug the external into my Windows 7 laptop, XAMPP doesn't run. I run the control panel. It says 'Install(er) Directory: No Installer Package Found. When I click Start next to Apache and MySql it says Apache / MySql started but the Running green message does not appear, or appears for a split second then disappears. Localhost is unavailable.
